2012 New Year’s Resolution: A Safer Work Site
What are your safety resolutions for the New Year?
What do you plan to do differently to increase the level of safety on your work site?
Here are some simple safety practices you can put into action today
- When entering or leaving a vehicle, use three-points of contact at all times.
- Wear appropriate footwear. For most work sites, that means steel capped boots with non-slip rubber soles.
- Keep your work area clean and well organised, to minimize tripping hazards.
- Use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Never override or disable critical safety equipment.
- Always protect yourself against a fall when working at height.
- Make sure your equipment is safe to use before you use it.
- Know the limitations of your equipment and do not exceed them.
- If you see someone doing something unsafe, stop them. You have the responsibility to protect the safety of yourself and others around you.
- Moving mobile equipment in reverse is far more dangerous than moving it forward; avoid reverse moves whenever possible.
- Wearing a seat belt helps operators maintain good posture – and that helps to reduce back injuries.
- If you are a fatigued operator you are a danger to yourself and others. Be rested and alert.
- Employ leadership by example. You can’t expect the people who work for you to follow safety rules if you don’t.
FINALLY:
A competent workforce is a pre-requisite for strong safety performance.
Your ongoing toolboxes and training sessions are essential!
